Public transit continues to shock and awe (Part 1: Awe)

Filed under: Uncategorized — attaikede @ 4:02 am

The train I take to work runs both underground and above ground. There are a couple lines I can take, but I catch both in an above ground area and then they go underground at the next stop. The trains have these steps that go down so that people can climb up onto the train when the train runs above ground. The steps get taken up right before the train goes underground because the subway platform is at the same level as the train which means the steps aren’t required underground.

Those steps are well designed! Sometimes the train is so packed in the morning that we’re jammed in like sardines right at the bottom of the steps! The train pauses right before it goes into the tunnel to go underground, and the driver announces that the steps are going up. Sure enough, the steps start rising, and all the people standing on the steps at that time come up along with them! The same thing happens when the train is coming out of the underground up to street level. This time the driver announces that the steps are coming down and so all the people standing in that area sink down a couple feet along with them.
