It’s Cheer-tastic!

Filed under: Uncategorized — attaikede @ 5:44 pm

2 of my coworkers and their friends organized a kickball league that has games every Sunday. I’ve gone a few times now, and it’s fun. We organize ourselves into a couple of teams, play a bunch of innings and try to keep score. I look forward to it with a modest amount of enthusiasm.

Sadly, I am a *total* misfit!! Here’s why – they’re all excited and team-tastic! They cheer. They give each other high 5s. They banter. They run around and hug each other. They heckle the opposing team.

Me? What do I do? I either (1) try to muster up some artificial team-tastic cheer and pretend to join in or (2) stop pretending and walk around with whatever grim expression I normally have. One time I even tried to carefully observe everybody and try to do exactly what they were doing, but keeping that up without them noticing was so stressful and tiring that I couldn’t even kick the ball when it was my turn!

So now I don’t know what to do with myself. I like to play, and sometimes I do find the game exciting, like when there’s a good kick, or when somebody steals a base, etc, but my level of excitement is relatively so tepid, and my general conduct on the field is so insanely conservative, that in order to fit in i HAVE to try to copy them, which unfortunately is a bit stressful! If I don’t do that, it gets a bit weird! I’ve even caught the occasional sympathetic glance being directed my way! Really, they’re sweet people, but overall it just makes me want to scream … “THIS IS THE HAPPY ME!!!! AAAAAAAHH!”

Sigh. Maybe it’s cuz i’m canadian. maybe we canadians just aren’t bred for such rabid excitement? I don’t know. Kind of makes me relieved that my soccer team isn’t very excitable or sociable!
