Shopping for produce only!

Filed under: Uncategorized — attaikede @ 11:12 pm

I went to Target in early December. I brought some bread, some batteries, and a few other household items. There was nothing special about the trip or about my purchases.

I think it was all the recession talk that got me thinking when I got home – I bought bread. I bought bread even though I had tortillas (leftover from when I made enchiladas a couple weeks ago). I bought tortillas even though I had rice. I bought rice even though I had pasta. I bought pasta even though I had flour. And to top it all off I always have a box of Ryvita and at least one box of cereal on the go. Geez. Now that I think of cereal, I realize I also usually have oatmeal at home too!

Obviously, I didn’t need the bread.

I’ve since decided that I will not buy a single additional piece of food until I’ve used all similar foods at home. It’s time to get creative! I’m kinda thinking I can survive just buying produce for the next few weeks until I run out of staples. I definitely don’t need to buy any carb related stuff for a while (see list above).

The funny thing is my pantry/kitchen cabinets aren’t even that big! I really only have 1 cupboard of food plus whatever is in the fridge. (Maybe that’s a lot considering I’m 1 person…. I dunno. I have no point of comparison.) Considering the relatively small size of my stash, I thought this was just another scheme that I’d give up on after a week.

I’m happy to report the plan is going very well! I haven’t bought anything since December 3, when I bought a tomato. Granted, I have eaten out SEVERAL times since December 3, but that doesn’t count in this plan. This plan only covers food brought into the home for preparation and consumption inside the home :)

I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. So far I’ve made corn blinis, quesadillas and veggie burgers from things I harvested from the fridge and pantry. Nothing too fancy but all very yummy.

  3. Oh! Actually, I did some online research and seems like the recipe I have for blinis is not the official one. My mom gave me the one I have … she must have gotten it from some health food book! The one I have is:

    2 c flour, 1 tsp bkg powder, 2 eggs, can of corn, 1 c buttermilk/yogurt.

Mix, then make into pancakes! I ate them with tomato sauce.
